First Blog

Well, I've been in Ironguides training for a while now and haven't taken advantage of the blog yet, so finally, here we go :-)

This is my first season as a triathlete, and I have to say, I absolutely love it. I've been a runner and a casual cyclist for a couple of years but never a swimmer. I started triathlon because I had heard of Ironman and thought, "wow! What an amazing accomplishment!" I love a good challenge and decided that before I turned 30 I was going to do a HIM. This past May, I turned 28 and realized if I trained for a year, I'd be in my last season to fulfill that goal. So, here I am. Training hard and loving it.

Got some pretty cool gear: Cervelo P2, LG TT helmet, Shimano tri shoes and am about to get the new Ironguides tri suit!

My first race was a mini-sprint locally (The Wet Dog) in Decatur, AL. I really enjoyed it! The swim didn't scare me as bad as I thought it would. I made the mistake of not using my race wheels before race day and it really cost me. I crashed out in mile 1 of the bike ride! Plus, I wasn't exactly great in the aeros yet. Needless to say, My bike split was, errr, less than par for me. Anyhow, despite some nasty road rash and a busted shoe (it drug--still clipped in--while I skidded down the road), I was having way too much fun out there to let it bother me.

I wasn't expecting the run to be that much different but my legs were so tight from the bike. I had ran after biking before but never rode at race pace then ran at race pace! But, still, I loved it. That was The Day I knew I had found a home in triathlon.

Since then I have done two more sprints (Mountain Lakes Tri Guntersville and Frantic Frog-Scottsboro) and my best one was Mtn. Lakes where I had an 18.6mph bike pace.

Ta ta for now! EYT!

Illness and Reflection

I have to say, it has been an interesting week! A week ago, I flew to Charlotte with my Mom to visit my sister and her family. I made my mother get the flu shot so we would be protected from the flu bug since we were flying. I obsessively used hand sanitizer and was very careful with hand washing but...something slipped past me and I got strep (I think, at least that's what I treated), that turned into an upper respiratory infection, that turned into laryngitis and possibly "walking pneumonia" (… Continue

Kona vs. FL, 2010

As I'm getting ready to watch the IM World Championship in Kona, I started thinking a lot about that course. The announcer was saying how difficult the course was. Initially, Kona was going to be my A-race. But....I don't feel worthy of Kona yet-and I don't think I'm ready for a HIM on a tough course.

Then I saw a HIM in FL, May 16 (the day after my b-day!) that is really flat and goes around Disney....I'm thinking of changing my A-race to this one. It's only my first season and if I do Kona no… Continue
