Note that regarding carbs/protein -- you don't want to consume protein without carbs. The reason is simple: You want to PROMOTE an "insulin spike" so that you open the cells to the nutrients entering your blood stream. The carbs not only replenish glycogen, but also promote more rapid absorption of the amino acids. Weight lifters have been doing this for years. This basic effect is why (for non-diabetics) insulin is a BANNED substance.

I don't think that "the 4:1 study" even demonstrated that 4:1 was the best ratio... just that 4:1 was better than 4:0... ie it's better to have protein than no protein post-workout
